Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing is just another medical test. Although there is cultural shame around STIs, about 1 in 5 people has one right now (according to the Centers for Disease Control). STIs don’t always have symptoms but still can be transmitted. Tests are not harmful; untreated STIs are.

Our northeast Tennessee regional county health departments provide free STI screening. Free treatment also is provided (though there might be a sliding-scale fee for an office visit) for all STIs except Hepatits C and HIV. Hep C and HIV cases usually are referred to a navigator or to a facility that specializes in these infections.

It is a good idea to call ahead to confirm hours, find out whether you need an appointment, and ask about the sliding scale fees if necessary.

In addition, A Step Ahead Tri-Cities arranges for free long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in our area. They will set up the appointment and provide transportation if necessary. A well check is part of an appointment and can include both pregnancy and STI testing. LARCs include the implant, hormonal and copper IUDs, and the Depo-Provera shot.
